Founded in 1838, the Providence Shelter is one of Rhode Island’s oldest independent charities. Originally a building where “colored orphans” were housed and cared for, it is now a foundation giving grants to organizations serving black children.

In a time of changing demographics in greater Providence, the Shelter follows its historic mission of serving children of color, giving a strong priority to local children of African descent.
